Should You Watch SAO Alternative Gun Gale Online?
What’s up Kenobi’s? I’m gonna start off with a quick opinion on whether or not you should watch this show. Consider it a pre-review review, maybe? Sword Art Online is a controversial show and everyone knows it. I’ve met three different kinds of people. There are either people who love it, people who hate it, and then there are a select few who are indifferent toward it altogether. Most people fall into the first two categories, and the people who hate it… they really hate it. Like, a lot. So here is my advice to you. If you fall into the category of hating it, don’t even bother watching. If you liked SAO, you’re going to like this new addition to it. Let me get this out of the way also; I loved SAO. I love it for what it is, and not for what anyone else wanted it to be, thought it should have been, and whatever else. I’m not ashamed and there is nothing you can say to change my mind. I’m reading the light novels and I may or may not be listening to the opening tracks as I’m pounding out this article. Okay, moving on.
Llenn and the Squad Jam
Let’s talk about Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online . We’ve got the first two episodes at our fingertips now, so let’s dive right into the first one. The first episode was exactly what I would have expected. We’re introduced to one of the two protagonists that we know of. Okay, I admit that I cheated. I play the mobile game Sword Art Online: Memory Defrag, so I already knew about Llenn and Pito before the first episode. I also knew prior to watching that Llenn was a super tall Tokyo girl IRL. That may have changed my perspective of the possibly shocking realization at first that the main protagonist….is a Loli. A Loli decked out in pink..with a pink gun. Playing a gun game, in a forest. This isn’t my numero uno choice of outfit in this situation, but I digress. It’s my opinion that Llenn could care less what kind of situation she’s in; that pink outfit is a statement of who she wants to be in the virtual world. I guess I can respect that. Plus, she is SO CUTE!
So the Squad Jam is a free-for-all competition between twenty-three teams where each team can have a maximum of up to six players. This sounds a lot like…. PUBG. Can someone please call the SAO producers and tell them that there is a good chance they are going to get sued? I’ll just leave that right there for a second. …. …. Okay.
Was anyone else wondering why Llenn and M entered this fight as a duo? Where are the other four players on their team? In hindsight, now that I know Llenn is a complete badass, I’m not surprised at all. Either that, or we have yet to see the end of this engagement and their six man team split up at the beginning. I highly doubt that, however, since Llenn was the team leader and she made no mention of other team members in the first episode. Not to mention, she seemed completely clueless about squad battle, did she not?
M and the “Combat Pros”
A couple of other observations about the first episode… M seems really cool. I liked his attitude and the way he handled the combat situation. His analysis was spot on and he seems like a GGO veteran. Even so, I was getting pretty annoyed when he was telling Llenn what kind of guns were shooting at her. Cool dude, pretty sure she doesn’t care. Llenn personified my thoughts when she said, “Stop analyzing everything and help me!”, which of course makes me like her even more. Side note: As a gamer, I totally loved the several instances of first person gunplay and first person perspective in this first episode. Give me more of that please, SAO gods.
There is literally no way I can finish writing this post without discussing the “combat pro”s. I guess it isn’t shocking that a team of military guys would use a VRMMO gun game as a training exercise. As a Marine, that actually sounds like an insane amount of fun. I’d totally do that, but I wouldn’t have counted on getting ambushed by a cute little girl and getting wiped out. Those poor guys.
They’re going to have PTSD. They’re gonna be walking down the street… see someone carrying a suitcase, and start twitching.
Alright, that’s enough for today. I was actually intending to cover both episodes here, but I went on a little long. My thoughts on the second episode coming soon!
